Triple Candie's Temporary Mural Project started in 2004 as a series of artist-commissions for two bricked-up windows on its W126th Street facade. For each commission, the artist was required to sand-off the previous artist's work before painting a new mural on the same panels. The murals were on view for six months before they were repainted.
In 2006, Triple Candie itself began generating the murals, still changing them at the same frequency. In late 2007, when the window-recesses were covered with scaffolding because of construction, the project was re-sited, without permission, to the face of scaffolding itself, until May 2008 when the project was put on hold. The Temporary Mural Project was re-started at 500 West 148th Street, first by Triple Candie and then with invited artists.
